Sunflower Seeds

It’s been a while since I posted anything about my progress, and that’s simply because I wasn’t making progress to be honest. I had a lot of personal stuff going on over the past year and a half, so I wasn’t concentrating on my diet and essentially gave up. That’s a little harsh on myself because I never really “gave up”; I just kind of reverted back to old eating habits and didn’t put forth any effort into my weight loss journey. 

Anyway, I had been trying to get back into keto for the better part of four months but I would always screw it up. A birthday party here, a social gathering there, random free food given to me, etc. Always something. To the people who read this and are going through the weight loss struggle, I’m sure you’ll understand. But I finally got back in keto about three weeks ago; hence my reappearance on WordPress. 

“Veezy, what the hell does this have to do with sunflower seeds?” That’s an excellent question. You gotta let me ramble sometimes and get it out. So yeah, one of my coworkers has been munching on sunflower seeds at work and has been dropping weight. I recalled it a couple weeks ago at the store, and decided to check out the nutrition facts. It turns out that sunflower seeds are pretty damn keto-friendly. There’s maybe 6g carbs in an entire regular-sized bag, and they have a high fat ratio compared to the protein and carbs. There’s about 380 calories in the whole bag on top of that. Now I know some of you might not wanna waste that many calories on seeds, but I guarantee that if you eat a bag of sunflower seeds throughout your shift, you’re probably not gonna be hungry for a while. That decreased hunger you experience while in keto really helps out with this too. Plus they’re less than $2 a bag! I’m cheap, so this is a major plus for me.

Sunflower seeds are usually pretty salty, but I don’t really care about that. I say that because even when I was 330+ lbs, my blood pressure was always on point. It helps that I’m still in 20s too. I’m gonna try this for about a month and see how it goes. My favorite flavor so far is the DAVID Ranch. I tried dill pickle yesterday and those were pretty good too. Be cheap like me and eat sunflower seeds. Anybody out there have any suggestions for keto-friendly snacks?

  1. I just “discovered” unshelled sunflower seeds a couple of weeks ago as well–another parent was bringing them to flag football practice and sharing with everyone. Now we’re all addicted lol! Anyway, I doubt anyone would be able to eat an entire bag in a day because it takes so long to mess around getting the shell off and enjoying just the salty flavor that you end up spending all your time doing that and trick yourself into thinking you’re eating! I love the cracked pepper and salt. Looooove it! And I was looking at the carbs of sunflower seeds (shelled) vs. peanuts. More fiber and less sugar in them than peanuts!

    • Sunflower seeds are better than peanuts when it comes to the carbs/fat ratio, hands down. I have a lot hate relationship with sunflower seeds because I can munch on them all day when they’re shelled, but if I eat just the kernels, I get this weird nausea feeling that makes absolutely no sense. Weird, I know. Shells it is!

    Pork rinds! Low or no carbs, high fat. Good on their own, or with other great high-fat things to dip them in (sour cream, guacamole, ranch dressing (homemade, though, ’cause of the nasty vegetable oils in store bought ones, including the fancy “organic” ones!)
